15-year-old Girl Killed in Columbia Heights Shooting

A 15-year-old girl was killed in a shooting late Thursday night in Columbia Heights, authorities have confirmed.

Around 11:57 p.m., police were called to the 3900 block of 3rd St. NE. after a report of a victim being struck by gunfire.

Initial scanner dispatches said officers determined that the gunfire had come from outside of the apartment building, with the victim found inside with a gunshot wound.

Responders attempted CPR on the girl but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two juveniles were detained for questioning, the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office said, but both were released. No arrests have been announced in connection to the killing.

The victim of the shooting was identified early Friday afternoon as Derryanna Deashia Davis, 15, of Columbia Heights.

“This is a horrific loss of life. We will continue the investigation until the truth is found and justice is served. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends during this difficult time,” Anoka County Sheriff James Stuart said in a media release.

The shooting remains under investigation by the Columbia Heights Police Department, Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office and the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office.

UPDATE: The Anoka County Attorney's Office says charges have been filed against a 16-year-old for his alleged role in Davis’ fatal shooting. Damico Jamal-Toyko High, of Minneapolis, faces 2nd-degree manslaughter, the attorney’s office said Wednesday, March 31.

High has been charged by juvenile delinquency petition and the Anoka County Attorney's Office is seeking to have him certified as an adult. His next court hearing is scheduled for April 26.

A booking photo for High was not immediately available.
