Saint Paul police have confirmed that a total of five people were shot late Saturday afternoon in the city’s Frogtown neighborhood after a funeral gathering at a senior apartment building.

Officers were initially called to the 500 block of Dale St. N. around 5:15 p.m. for a report of a “large argument” and one person who was shot, according to initial police radio dispatches.

The chaotic scene played out in the parking lot of the Kings Crossing apartment building after a “celebration of life event” inside, police said. At the end of the event, some type of altercation occurred and gunshots were fired in the lot.

The gunfire may have come from occupants of two separate vehicles, according to the initial dispatches.

Medics pronounced an adult male victim dead at the scene and another adult male died after arriving at United Hospital in a private vehicle.

SPPD says another adult male victim is in critical condition as of late Saturday and two adult female victims have non-life-threatening injuries.

A motive for the shooting has not yet been determined, SPPD said, but investigators do not believe it was a random incident. It comes less than a day after three teenagers were shot near a funeral gathering for Devin Scott, a 15-year-old fatally stabbed at Harding High School earlier this month. As of now, there is no information linking the two incidents.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct autopsies to identify the victims of the Saturday shooting. They are fourth and fifth homicides of 2023 in Saint Paul.

UPDATE: On Monday, Feb. 27, the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the two men who were fatally shot as 34-year-old Larry Jiles Jr., of Hugo, and 37-year-old Troy Kennedy, of Saint Paul. There have been no arrests announced in relation to the incident.

By Thursday, March 2, Saint Paul police had made an arrest in relation to the shooting. John Lee Edmondson, 52, was arrested by SPPD officers and was transported to the Ramsey County Jail on suspicion of murder.
