Two people are dead and eight others injured in a shooting outside the Monarch nightclub on the 300 block of N. 1st Ave. in downtown Minneapolis just before 2 a.m. Saturday, May 22.

Police confirmed two men died, one man is in critical condition and seven other adult victims have non-life-threatening injuries in the mass shooting. Two men were in a verbal argument among a large group of people outside when they both pulled out guns and started shooting. One of the men who was dead at the scene was believed to be one of the shooters, authorities said.

Minneapolis police arrested a 23-year-old man in relation to the incident by Saturday afternoon, taking Jawan Contrail Carroll into custody in Bloomington. Carroll was booked into the Hennepin County Jail on a probable cause murder charge and held without bail.

Officers locked down the area near the nightclub as they continued to process the large scene early Saturday. There did not appear to be any additional victims, police said around 4 a.m.

“Last night again brought tragic news. Again, our collective conscience is shocked. Lives have been lost on our Northside and downtown. And we are left to process the reality that bullets have struck innocent bystanders, people welcoming the warm weather and celebrating being together again,” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said in an emailed statement.

“These outcomes are not fated. We can stem crime in our city, but it will take all of us coming together with a renewed commitment to preventative work and a shared resolve to stop the gun violence and bring the perpetrators to justice,” Frey said.

UPDATE: Man Facing 9 Charges After Double-fatal Downtown Minneapolis Shootout

The downtown double-fatal shooting follows another fatal shooting in north Minneapolis just a few hours before, around 8:40 p.m. on Friday near 26th Ave. N. & Logan Ave. One man died of his injuries at the hospital and two others were injured in a related two-vehicle crash.

“These brazen senseless acts of gun violence must stop. The perpetrators of these crimes should never find refuge or anonymity in our communities. Minneapolis police officers will continue to rush into harm’s way to save lives however we need help from community leaders and residents to stand up and speak out denouncing loudly that they will not tolerate this violence as well. Our greatest strength is when we all work together to keep our city safe. Our children are watching us and how we respond during these times. Let’s come together to uplift hope and peace,” Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo said in a statement.

The fatal shootings are 29th, 30th and 31st homicides of 2021 in Minneapolis. The victims have not yet been publicly identified, but University of St. Thomas officials confirmed that one of its students, Charlie Johnson, a senior set to graduate from the School of Engineering on Saturday, was the second man shot and killed.
