Minneapolis Hit-and-Run Results in Fatality; Driver Arrested

Minneapolis police say a man is dead following a hit-and-run crash on the 2400 block of Washington Avenue North. Officers responded to the scene at approximately 5:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a collision involving a motorized minibike.

Upon arrival, officers found a man with apparent life-threatening injuries. They provided medical aid until EMS arrived, but the man was declared deceased at the scene by paramedics.

Preliminary information indicates that the victim was riding a motorized minibike westbound on 24th Avenue North when he attempted to turn onto Washington Avenue North. Witnesses say a vehicle traveling northbound on Washington Avenue North at a high rate of speed struck the minibike. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene on foot before officers arrived.

Officers quickly secured the scene and canvassed the area. The driver was located nearby and taken into custody. He has been booked into Hennepin County Jail on probable cause criminal vehicular homicide.

Investigators from the Minneapolis Police Department are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash, including whether drug or alcohol intoxication was a factor.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the deceased man's name and the official cause and manner of death in the coming days.
