CHARGES: Teen Driving Stolen Car Intentionally Struck 70-year-old
A 1st-degree murder charge has been filed against a Sauk Rapids teen after he allegedly stole a vehicle and purposely struck a man on a walking path last Friday.
The criminal complaint filed in Stearns County Court says that Israel Muyaya Madimba, 16, was at the YMCA in Saint Cloud on April 21 when he found car keys in a locker room. Madimba allegedly took the keys and then stole the vehicle from the parking lot.
Madimba told authorities he had been listening to a “song about murder,” then intentionally drove onto the walking path before accelerating and striking 70-year-old Norbert Olmscheid.
Olmscheid was treated at the scene and transported to the hospital but later died of his injuries.
Police say video surveillance was obtained of Madimba stealing the vehicle and driving up onto the walking path. After the crash, he fled on foot but was apprehended by officers a short distance away.
Court records show Madimba was granted a public defender and bail was set at $2 million with no conditions or $1 million with conditions. A competency evaluation to assess Madimba for mental illness or cognitive impairment was also ordered.
