Derek Chauvin Guilty of All Charges in George Floyd's Killing
After deliberating for less than 11 hours, a jury has found the former Minneapolis police officer accused of killing George Floyd guilty of all three counts against him.
Ex-officer Derek Chauvin was accused of 2nd-degree unintentional murder, 3rd-degree murder and 2nd-degree manslaughter in George Floyd's death. Charges were read to the courtroom and broadcast live around the world as millions watched in anticipation of the news.
A crowd was growing outside the Hennepin County Government Center downtown and where Floyd was killed, at the intersection of E. 38th St. & Chicago Ave., now named in his memory.
The crowd downtown erupted in cheers when the verdict was announced, with music and horns blaring there and at 38th & Chicago, as well as in other cities around the country.
A heavy National Guard presence fanned out across the Twin Cities metro area in advance of the trial and will remain for several weeks in some form. Days of unrest followed Floyd's death last May, resulting in dozens of businesses destroyed.
Chauvin was transferred to the Oak Park Heights maximum security prison Tuesday night, where he was booked and now awaits sentencing in about eight weeks.
