DNA, Surveillance Tie 2 Suspects to Minneapolis Homicide

A man and woman have been charged with second-degree murder in connection with a fatal shooting in Minneapolis last spring.

According to the complaint, officers responded to a report of gunfire on the 2200 block of 5th Avenue North at approximately 4:43 a.m. on May 17, 2024, and found a male victim lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds.

Officers found the man initially responsive, but he lost consciousness shortly after. Police observed gunshot wounds to the victim’s face, neck, chest and abdomen. He later died at Hennepin County Medical Center.

Witnesses reported hearing an argument followed by gunshots and seeing a red Chevrolet Suburban leaving the scene. Investigators later linked the vehicle to the victim and found it abandoned in Minneapolis two days later. Surveillance footage, DNA evidence and forensic analysis connected two suspects to the crime: Vernon Sirhyde Archie, 28, and Megan Renee Karjala, 24.

Authorities arrested both suspects in Saint Paul on May 20, 2024, after responding to a separate shots-fired incident. Officers found a stolen vehicle and recovered multiple firearms, including a .45 caliber pistol linked to the victim’s murder through ballistics testing.

According to a statement from Karjala, she and Archie had planned to steal a vehicle that night. She admitted to luring the victim to the location under the guise of a meeting arranged through a dating app. When the victim arrived, an attempt was made to take his keys, leading to a confrontation in which Archie allegedly shot the victim multiple times as he tried to flee. Karjala then held the victim at gunpoint while Archie retrieved the keys before both suspects fled in the stolen Suburban.

Warrants have been issued for the arrest of both suspects.
