Three police officers narrowly avoided serious injuries early Saturday morning after a suspected drunk driver struck two squad cars during a traffic stop.

The incident occurred just after midnight on County Road 81 near 85th Avenue North in Brooklyn Park.

An Osseo police officer had initiated a traffic stop when two assisting officers arrived and parked their squad cars nearby. While the officers were standing outside their vehicles discussing the stop, a vehicle traveling eastbound at high speed struck one of the squad cars.

The impact pushed the squad car forward into another squad, sending both vehicles onto the median where the officers had been standing moments earlier. The striking vehicle continued eastbound for about 100 yards before coming to a stop on the median and catching fire.

Two officers ran to the burning vehicle and safely pulled the driver out while the third officer attempted to extinguish the flames. The driver was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

The Osseo Police Department said officers sustained minor injuries and were treated and released.
