According to Duluth Police Chief Mike Ceynowa, around 2:20 p.m., officers were attempting to arrest a 34-year-old Duluth man for felony threats of violence near the 1500 block of East 5th Street in Duluth.
During a press conference Friday night, Ceynowa said that preliminary information showed the man was armed with a knife. Officers attempted to de-escalate with verbal communication, a taser and other less-lethal methods.
According to initial police dispatch audio, the shooting occurred in an alley.
At some point, the man “charged” a responding officer, who fired their handgun, Ceynowa said. Ceynowa added that officers immediately began rendering aid and called for paramedics. The man was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
Ceynowa said that the incident was captured on officers’ body cameras, though it is not yet known if or when that video may be released.
Ceynowa said that the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure. He added that the Minnesota BCA is handling the investigation.
