Felony Charges Filed Against Suspected Drunk Driver in Fatal Saint Paul Crash

A Saint Paul man has been charged with criminal vehicular homicide following a fatal collision late last year that left one person dead and another injured.

The complaint alleges that Sanjit Singh, 54, had an alcohol concentration nearly three times the legal limit when he crashed into another vehicle on Shepard Road in the early morning hours of December 29, 2024.

Police responded to the crash around 2:36 a.m. and found two severely damaged vehicles, a Chevrolet Impala and a GMC Sierra. The driver of the Impala was unresponsive and later pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the Impala sustained minor injuries. Singh was found unconscious inside his GMC Sierra and was transported to Regions Hospital.

A reconstruction of the crash determined that Singh was driving in the wrong direction on Shepard Road, leading to the head-on collision. A subsequent blood test taken at the hospital revealed Singh’s blood alcohol concentration was .230, nearly three times the legal limit of .08.

The surviving passenger told police she and the driver had smoked marijuana before the crash, and officers found suspected marijuana paraphernalia inside the Impala. However, authorities concluded that Singh’s impairment and wrong-way driving were the primary causes of the collision.

Singh has been charged with felony criminal vehicular homicide and a gross misdemeanor count of criminal vehicular operation resulting in bodily harm. A warrant has been issued for his arrest. If convicted of the felony charge, Singh faces up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
