Hennepin Co. Sheriff Sentenced After Guilty Plea in DUI Crash

Hennepin County Sheriff David Hutchinson was sentenced today as part of a plea agreement after driving under the influence and crashing his county-issued vehicle on December 8th near Alexandria, Minnesota.
Hutchinson was given a 90-day jail sentence which was stayed for two years, along with two years of probation. Hutchinson was also ordered to complete a chemical assessment, have no alcohol violations, or driver’s license violations, as well as abstain from any alcohol or controlled substance use with the exception of prescribed medications. Hutchinson will be subjected to random drug and alcohol testing as part of the sentence.
Hutchinson was initially charged with four misdemeanors after the incident and later pled guilty to one DUI charge, while two other counts of DWI were dismissed and the third for carrying a pistol while intoxicated was continued for dismissal, meaning it will be dropped at a later date if conditions are met.
An analysis done by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension determined Hutchinson’s blood alcohol content to be .13. The legal limit in Minnesota is .08.
In a written statement after pleading guilty, Hutchinson stated he was enrolled in an outpatient treatment program and had returned to work as sheriff.
