Infant Dies After Cannon Falls Apartment Fire; 3 Others Hurt

One of three children who were hospitalized following a Cannon Falls apartment fire has died of her injuries.
10-month-old Seqouyah Kelleymae Johnson died early Friday morning at Hennepin Healthcare in Minneapolis, according to a media release from the medical examiner’s office. The cause of her death was listed as smoke inhalation.

Johnson, two other children and their mother were injured in the apartment fire at 1201 1st St. N. on Wednesday, April 19. Crews were called around 1:15 p.m. for the report of a fire with children trapped inside the building.
The first officer to arrive found the apartment resident, an adult female, at the front of the building with an arm injury. The woman said that three children were inside the apartment and she had been cut while trying to get them out, according to a media release from the Cannon Falls Police Department.
From the outside of the complex, the officer found the apartment bedroom fully engulfed in flames. The officer broke out the second bedroom windows and the living room windows in an attempt to find the children.
One of the children was spotted by an ambulance crew member and a second child was spotted closeby in the living room. The window was cleared of glass and one of the ambulance members climbed in, handing the children to the officer and another ambulance member.
Both children were rushed to the ambulance rig and transported to the hospital. A third child was found by a firefighter shortly after crews entered the residence. First aid and oxygen were administered at the scene until the child could be transported to the hospital by ambulance. The adult female was also transported to the hospital by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.
The children were later transferred by air ambulance to Hennepin Healthcare for specialized care.
All three children were placed into a medically induced coma at the hospital and were being treated in the burn unit, police said. An update on the other two children is not available.
The fire Wednesday afternoon was eventually brought under control and there were no other reports of injury. All twelve units of the building were displaced for the night and residents assisted by the American Red Cross.
Police and the State Fire Marshal are working to determine the cause of the fire.
