Inmate Who Assaulted Prison Guards During Riot Has Sentence Extended
An inmate who assaulted two Stillwater prison guards last March during a prison fight pled guilty to two new felony charges on Friday and was sentenced to additional prison time.
Christiaan D’Vandrick Bonner, 29, was a former inmate at the state prison MCF-Stillwater in Bayport when court documents allege on March 6 a fight broke out among several inmates inside a unit of the prison.
A correctional officer was responding to break up the fight when Bonner moved into the officer’s path and struck him in the jaw with a closed fist, knocking him to the ground.
A second correctional officer attempted to assist when Bonner punched him as well. Bonner was tackled to the ground and, while officers attempted to restrain him, Bonner bit one of the guards on the left side of the chest.
Both correctional officers suffered injuries and were evaluated at a local hospital. One guard was placed on “light duty” for several days following the assault while the other had a bite mark visible several weeks after the assault. Both officers required follow-up medical appointments.
Bonner pled guilty to two charges of 4th-degree assault on a correctional employee, both felonies. Bonner received one year sentences for each, to be served concurrently, but consecutively to his original assault charge he was serving time for at the Stillwater prison.
Bonner was expected to be released in August 2025, but according to the Minnesota Department of Corrections, he is now expected to be released in April 2026.
Bonner has been held at the maximum security prison in Oak Park Heights since the assault took place.
