The Inver Grove Heights Police Department is mourning the loss of one of their own after an officer suffered a medical emergency on Friday, April 28 and died at the hospital on Sunday.

According to a Facebook post by the department, Inver Grove Heights police and fire crews responded to the emergency on Friday, along with MHealth paramedics.

Officer Ben Bidon was brought to Regions Hospital in Saint Paul for further medical care. On Sunday night, Bidon died at the hospital while surrounded by family and friends, the department said.

Bidon was “compassionate and diligent in his duties and served the public with pride. He worked tirelessly to make this community safe,” the department said.

“As a member of this police department, he served as a crime scene technician, field training officer, firearms and use of force instructor, SWAT operator, and team leader and was currently assigned to our investigation unit. In 2020 he was honored with our lifesaving award and in 2022 a Chief’s Award of Merit,” according IGHPD.

The release also said Bidon enjoyed camping, hiking, hunting and playing hockey. He leaves behind a wife and three daughters: Addison, 9, Evelyn, 6, and Elenor, age 4.

Bidon was a native Minnesotan and a graduate of Blaine High School, beginning his career with IGHPD in May 2015. He served in the Army from 2005 to 2009, including a 14-month tour in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom with the 101st Airborne Tiger Force Unit.
