Coon Rapids police were called to the home in March after the man told his neighbor that he had unintentionally discharged his handgun, causing the bullet to strike his house. Officers say the man was cooperative and turned over the handgun, as well as the discharged casing.
A Coon Rapids detective spoke with the man, who said he had recently attended a permit to carry class and purchased the handgun around the same time. He told the detective he was practicing drawing the unloaded handgun in-and-out of the holster, but decided to load the gun to feel the difference in weight. Shortly after, he stated the drawstring from his sweatpants entered the trigger guard and depressed the trigger as he was raising the gun.
Officers say the bullet went through the man’s home, which was also occupied by six children, before entering the neighbor’s home and striking some basement décor inside.
The man is charged via summons and could face up to two years in prison if convicted.
