Man Faces More Abuse Charges After 2nd Child Injured

A 30-year-old Duluth man faces additional criminal charges based on allegations of abusing his 19-month-old child after being previously charged with causing injuries to his 6-week-old child in April.

Antonio Lemar Corwin, 30, was charged in April with 3rd-degree assault causing substantial bodily harm, malicious punishment of a child, assaulting a police officer, fleeing and obstruction after investigators learned of a 6-week-old child who had suffered injuries consistent with abuse.

Investigators say the child was brought to the emergency room by her parents. Doctors there discovered a right wrist fracture as well as a femur fracture. A physician that treated the child told investigators: “Each of these injuries alone are highly concerning for abuse; both being present at the same time and being present on opposite sides of the body, each raised the probability of infliction injury even more,” according to the charges filed against Corwin.

The child's mother told investigators that she woke up around 4 a.m. and noted the victim was fine. When she woke again at 7:30 a.m., she asked Corwin to give a bottle to the child. Shortly after, she heard the child begin to cry louder. When the mother went to help Corwin, she said heard a clicking, suspected the child suffered a leg injury and then brought the child to the hospital.

When Corwin was questioned by investigators, he said he was done talking and stood up to leave. When police told Corwin he was under arrest, he jumped over a table and ran towards a door, where an officer blocked his escape. Corwin threw a punch in the direction of the officer, but missed. The two officers tackled Corwin to the ground where Corwin still was fighting with officers. Eventually, the two officers were able to place Corwin in handcuffs and bring him to jail.

The physician who treated the 6-week-old later reviewed medical records of Corwin’s other children. The physician learned of another incident where Corwin and the child’s mother brought their 19-month-old child to the hospital in March 2023 for a left arm injury. Medical records say doctors were told that the child was found laying on top of his left arm and crying after possibly climbing the side of a crib and falling to the floor. Based upon the exam done by doctors, they did not suspect abuse at the time of this incident. However, according to another physician, the injuries found on the 19-month-old were inconsistent with a short fall because there were three different areas of injuries noted.

When the mother was questioned again in May, she admitted the story she had told doctors was untrue, hoping that Corwin was not injuring their children. The mother told police that she was doing laundry in another room while Corwin was left alone with the child. She then heard the child crying and went to check on him. Corwin told the mother that the child fell from the crib before deciding to bring him to the hospital. Corwin told the mother that she had to talk to the doctors because he did not want to explain what had happened.

Corwin remains in jail and faces up to five years in prison on the most serious charge. Corwin has been ordered to have no contact with his children if he is released on bail.
