Man Found Unresponsive in Burning Saint Paul Home

A man was taken to the hospital with critical injuries after being found unconscious inside a burning Saint Paul home early Thursday.

Crews rushed to the 10 block of Nelson Street in the Battle Creek neighborhood shortly before 3 a.m., following a 911 report of flames coming from a tuck-under garage, according to the Saint Paul Fire Department.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames but discovered the man unconscious inside the home during their search. He was located after other occupants had escaped and told responders that everyone was out, fire officials said.

Paramedics transported the man to the hospital and reported that he was in cardiac arrest, according to initial radio dispatches. No other victims were found inside and there were no firefighters injured during the response.

Investigators say the fire began in the garage and did not extend to any other parts of the home, but smoke quickly filled the interior. Officials have not confirmed whether the home had working smoke detectors at the time.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation with assistance from the Saint Paul Police Department.
