A man is dead following an overnight shooting in Saint Paul, marking the city’s 18th homicide of the year so far.

Saint Paul police say they were called to the 1200 block of University Avenue West just before 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday after a 911 caller reported hearing gunshots and seeing someone lying on the ground.

When officers arrived, they found a man with apparent gunshot wounds behind an apartment building. Medics from the Saint Paul Fire Department were called to the scene and pronounced the man dead.

Authorities say the scene was secured, with homicide investigators now working to identify what led to the shooting and who is responsible. Officers are also looking for witnesses and collecting any physical or video evidence.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy to confirm the man’s identity and determine the exact cause of death. Anyone with information is asked to contact investigators.

UPDATE | Friday, Sept. 20: The victim has been identified by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner as Lul Dak Chak, 32, of Ames, Iowa. On Wednesday, Sept. 18, Kueth Chuol Ngut, 22, was arrested at a residence in Minneapolis in relation to the homicide. On Friday, he was formally charged with second-degree murder. More details on what led up to the shooting are expected soon.
