Stearns County 911 dispatchers received a call at 7:40 p.m. on Tuesday evening from a man who stated that another driver had fired a gun and struck his vehicle.
The man was reported to be bleeding, but was unsure if it was from broken glass or a gunshot wound. Deputies arrived and determined the man suffered a gunshot wound to the tip of his nose.
Deputies began looking for the suspect vehicle and later found the 2010 Ford Escape near the I-94 exit to Melrose.
The investigation determined that a driving dispute took place between Woods, in the Ford Escape, and the victim, in a 2012 grey Volkswagen GTI, while they were westbound on Interstate 94.
At one point during the dispute and while the vehicles were still westbound, Woods allegedly fired a handgun from the Ford Escape, striking the other male in the Volkswagen GTI.
The suspect, Shannon Woods, 23, from Inkster, Michigan, was stopped and taken into custody on suspicion of 2nd-degree assault with a deadly weapon. Woods faces up to seven years on prison if convicted.
Woods is being held in the Stearns County Jail awaiting a court appearance.
The Stearns County Sheriff's Office is asking anyone who may have witnessed the event to contact them at 320-259-3700.
