Minneapolis Man Sentenced for 2022 Murder
A Minneapolis man will spend more than 34 years in prison after being sentenced for second-degree murder tied to a 2022 fatal shooting.
Court records show that Mayan Deng Mayan, 27, was sentenced to 414 months in prison on October 28, 2024, following his conviction for the 2022 shooting death of a man near Harmon Place and Maple Street in Minneapolis.
The shooting took place in the early morning hours of Sept. 18, 2022. Surveillance video captured Mayan exiting a silver Acura MDX, firing multiple rounds at the victim, and fleeing the scene. The victim, who sustained gunshot wounds to the leg and chest, was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after.
Mayan initially faced a first-degree murder charge, but that count was dismissed as part of a plea agreement. As part of the sentence, he received credit for 585 days already served in custody. He will serve at least two-thirds of his sentence—roughly 276 months—before becoming eligible for supervised release in 2046.
The court also ordered Mayan to comply with several conditions, including a ban on possessing firearms and ammunition, providing a DNA sample, and securing permission before leaving the state after his release.
