2 Killed, 3 Injured in Downtown Minneapolis Shooting

Minneapolis police are investigating a shooting that left two men dead and three women injured early Saturday morning in downtown Minneapolis.

Police say the incident unfolded at around 1:56 a.m. near 5th Street and Hennepin Avenue, where officers were responding to a fight as part of the department’s Late-Night Safety Plan.

As officers worked to break up the altercation, they heard gunshots nearby and rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, they found five people who had been shot.

The victims included two adult men who were transported by paramedics to the hospital but ultimately died from their injuries. Two juvenile females and one adult female were also injured by gunfire but are expected to survive.

Police arrested one man in connection with the shooting, but investigators are still working to determine his involvement. Officers secured the area, canvassed for witnesses, and recovered a firearm at the scene. Minneapolis Police Department forensic scientists responded to process the evidence.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the identities of the two men who died, as well as their cause and manner of death.

Chief Brian O’Hara said the department will continue its efforts to enhance safety downtown. “MPD investigators will work tirelessly to bring whoever is responsible for this tragic incident to justice,” he said.
