Police responded to a domestic disturbance in Maplewood Wednesday night that ended with a man’s suspected suicide.

Officers were called to a home on the 2200 block of McMenemy Street North at about 8:05 p.m. for a reported physical altercation between a boyfriend and girlfriend.

When officers arrived, they spoke with a female victim on the main level of the home. As they gathered information, they heard what sounded like two gunshots coming from the basement.

Believing the suspect was armed, officers quickly evacuated the victim and attempted to make contact with the man in the basement, but received no response. Because of the presence of weapons and the possibly barricaded suspect, the Ramsey County SWAT team was activated and a perimeter was set up around the home.

For nearly two hours, authorities worked to establish communication with the suspect, using loudspeakers and phone calls. When repeated attempts failed, SWAT officers entered the residence and searched the basement, where they found the man deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police have not yet released the man’s identity, pending family notification. No one else was injured in the incident and the investigation remains ongoing.
