Robbinsdale Officers Rescue 2 Dogs from House Fire

Robbinsdale police say two dogs were rescued from a home quickly filling with smoke after officers kicked in the front door to free them.
The incident occurred around 6:55 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27 on the 4200 block of York Avenue North.
Officers responded to reports from the homeowner, who was not at the residence but saw smoke through interior cameras. The only occupants inside the home were the two Australian Shepherds.
Upon arrival, officers observed thick smoke through the windows but were unable to find an unlocked door. Sergeant Schoenhard arrived shortly after and spoke with neighbors, who were on the phone with the homeowner. With permission from the homeowner, Sgt. Schoenhard breached the front door, and the two dogs immediately ran out. Neighbors assisted in moving the animals safely to the backyard.
“Preserving life is a fundamental pillar in law enforcement. This is not only human life, it extends to all life,” said Robbinsdale Police Captain John Elder. “These officers were unwilling to wait for the fire department to arrive to ensure the animals’ safety. This was simply the right and compassionate response to this call.”
The Robbinsdale Fire Department was able to extinguish the basement fire quickly, preventing major structural damage to the home.
