Witnesses told police that the shooting occurred during a family celebration of a new birth. One of the estimated thirty attendees said he was playing corn hole in the backyard when he heard three gunshots. He turned to see Chang holding a firearm and shooting the victim once again in the back. The witness and other family members immediately tackled Chang to the ground and disarmed him, throwing the gun across the yard.

According to witnesses, the shooting followed an argument between Chang and the victim. Another witness told police that he heard Chang say, "Today you’re going to die," before pulling a handgun from his waistband and opening fire. Another witness said Chang admitted to shooting the victim “because he disrespected me,” the documents allege.

Police reviewed surveillance footage from the residence which showed Chang shooting the victim without any apparent physical altercation. The video also captured a small child standing just feet away from the victim as the shots were fired.

Additionally, officers located a black handgun magazine and two loose pistol rounds in Chang’s pockets during his arrest.

Chang remains in custody and faces a maximum sentence of 40 years if convicted. He is charged with second-degree murder with intent but without premeditation.
