Small Plane Crash Kills 2 in Washington County

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office says two men died after their plane crashed into a yard of a residence on the 15000 block of Afton Hills Drive South in Afton just before 9:45 a.m. Saturday.

Several 911 calls were placed by neighbors reporting what sounded like a small explosion.

Deputies arrived and located the small aircraft fully engulfed in flames in the yard of a home near the attached garage.

Firefighters extinguished the flames and located two bodies inside the aircraft. Authorities say an 85-year-old man from White Bear Lake and a 68-year-old man from Baytown Township died in the crash, but their names have not been released at this time.

According to data from flight tracking website FlightRadar24, a 1948 Globe GC-1B single-engine plane that departed from the Lake Elmo Airport just minutes before stopped tracking near the site of the crash and appeared to have lost airspeed in its last report available.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
