A driver accused of crashing into a school bus in September is now facing 24 criminal charges.

The crash injured all 22 occupants of the bus to varying degrees and left the SUV driver, 19-year-old Svea Lynn Snickers, with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials say the crash occurred at 7:50 a.m. on September 12, 2024, near the intersection of Highway 5 and Townline Road in Hibbing. The school bus, en route to Cherry School, tipped onto its side after being struck by Snickers, who was driving a 2006 Toyota RAV4, according to Hibbing Fire Chief Erik Jankila.

The charges include five counts of criminal vehicular operation causing substantial bodily harm, a felony carrying up to three years in prison per count. These counts are linked to victims who suffered severe injuries, including fractures and concussions. Another 17 counts of gross misdemeanor criminal vehicular operation causing bodily harm address injuries ranging from bruises to lacerations.

Snickers also faces two misdemeanors: one for failing to stop at a stop sign before the crash and another for accessing an application on her phone while driving.

State Troopers interviewed Snickers before she was transported for medical care. She reportedly admitted to checking her phone prior to the crash but could not recall if it was moments before the collision or minutes earlier.

Investigators later executed a search warrant on her phone, which revealed she had taken a Snapchat screenshot at 7:48 a.m.—seconds before a 911 call reporting the crash. Data retrieved from her vehicle showed pre-crash speeds of 48 to 53 mph, with no evidence of braking before impact.

Snickers was charged via summons on Thursday and is scheduled to make her initial court appearance on January 30, 2025.
