Minneapolis Fire Officials say a woman and a dog died after a house fire Tuesday evening.

Fire crews responded to a duplex on the 1000 block of 19th Avenue Northeast in Minneapolis around 6:32 p.m.

Crews arrived to find smoke coming from the second floor of the 2-1/2-story home and forced entry to search for the source of the smoke. Inside, they found heavy black smoke and a smoldering couch fire, which was quickly extinguished.

During the search of the residence, firefighters discovered an unconscious woman and a dog on the floor of the second-floor unit. Both were carried outside, where emergency crews began CPR. Paramedics from Hennepin Healthcare continued medical care but the woman and dog died at the scene.

This marks the first fire fatality reported in Minneapolis in 2025. The cause of the fire remains under investigation and authorities have not released the woman’s identity. It’s unclear if smoke alarms were present or functioning in the unit.
