Saint Paul police are investigating a homicide after a woman was fatally shot early Saturday morning on the 40 block of Lyton Pl., in the city's North End neighborhood.

Officers first on scene reported finding the woman outside, barely breathing around 12:10 a.m., according to initial dispatch audio.

A 911 caller reported hearing an argument followed by at least one gunshot, police said in a media release. Officers rushed to the scene and found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound lying on the sidewalk outside of a house.

A witness initially reported to 911 that the victim had a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but SPPD confirmed around 2 a.m. that the victim had died and the shooting was being investigated as a homicide.

Two men who were at the house when officers arrived were taken to police headquarters for questioning.

SPPD said Mark Antonio Bell Jr., 35, of Saint Paul, has been booked into the Ramsey County Jail for suspicion of homicide in connection to the shooting.

The killing is Saint Paul’s fourth homicide of 2022.
