1 Killed, 2 Injured in East Side Saint Paul Shooting

One young woman was killed and two others were injured in a shooting in Saint Paul’s Greater East Side neighborhood on Wednesday night, police have confirmed.

At about 7:45 p.m., officers responded to the area of Hazelwood Street and Maryland Avenue East after multiple 911 callers and an officer on patrol reported hearing shots fired in the area.

Officers on the 1200 block of Hazelwood Street found three teenage female victims, all with apparent gunshot injuries, SPPD said.

The three victims were transported to Regions Hospital where one of the female victims was pronounced dead. The injuries to the other two victims are not considered life-threatening.

The ages of the victims have not yet been confirmed and they have not been officially identified. According to initial dispatches, a 13-year-old and a 15-year-old were the other two victims.

Saint Paul officers secured the scene and began canvassing the area for witnesses in what is the 27th homicide of 2023 in the city. Investigators with the police department's homicide unit are currently working to determine what led to the shooting and who is responsible.

As of early Thursday, there had been no confirmed arrests announced in relation to the shooting.

According to dispatch audio reviewed by MN CRIME, there may have been more than two dozen rounds fired. Multiple 7.62x39 casings were found by officers, indicating that a rifle like an AK-47 was used, and a vehicle was found with damage from the shots.

UPDATE: The Ramsey County Medical Examiner has identified the homicide victim as Monica Holley, 14, of Saint Paul.

Hours after this shooting a fourth victim, a 19-year-old female, sought medical attention at Regions Hospital for a non-life-threatening gunshot injury to her leg.
