Authorities have released new details on the deputy involved shooting in Monticello that left an 18-year-old man hospitalized after he advanced on deputies with a knife late last month.

The BCA identified the man as 18-year-old Dwayne Evan Trunnell and confirmed that deputies fired after repeated commands for him to stop.

Deputies were sent to the 900 block of Golf Course Road just before 9 p.m. after a 911 caller reported a man yelling in the street while carrying a large knife. When they arrived, they found Trunnell walking in the roadway with the knife in his hand. Deputies repeatedly ordered him to drop it but he ignored them and quickly moved toward them.

Deputy Kyle Phillips deployed his Taser, but it failed to stop Trunnell as he continued advancing. Deputy Benjamin Skweres then fired his handgun, causing Trunnell to fall before he got up again and continued toward the deputies. Commands to drop the weapon continued as Trunnell kept approaching. Skweres fired a second time, and Trunnell fell, got up once more and ran a short distance before collapsing and releasing the knife.

Deputies moved in, took him into custody and provided care until medics arrived. Trunnell was taken to a local hospital and was listed in stable condition earlier in the week at North Memorial Health in Robbinsdale.

The deputies were not injured. Both had their body cameras activated and have since been placed on critical incident leave, which is standard following a deputy-involved shooting. BCA crime scene personnel recovered the knife, the Taser with a spent cartridge, spent shell casings and body camera video.
