A Hennepin County sheriff's deputy has been charged with two felony counts of criminal sexual conduct after an off-duty incident at a residence in Albertville early Sunday.
Jared Kenneth Sprunk, 33, of St. Michael, was charged in Wright County District Court with third-degree criminal sexual conduct involving penetration and coercion and fifth-degree criminal sexual conduct involving nonconsensual penetration, according to the criminal complaint filed earlier this week.
Sprunk has been placed on administrative leave by the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, which said in a statement that it supports a full and transparent investigation into the allegations.
Deputies with the Wright County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the Albertville residence around 4:27 a.m. after an adult male at the home reported that Sprunk had attempted to sexually assault an adult woman and had been in a physical altercation with another man at the residence.
Deputies found Sprunk outside the home, bleeding from his nose and the back of his head. He appeared highly intoxicated. The woman was inside the entryway and was reportedly crying and breathing quickly.
According to the complaint, the woman and a friend had met Sprunk at the 152 Club in Albertville earlier that evening. The group left the club and the woman invited Sprunk to a friend's residence to continue hanging out. Sprunk arrived at the home around 2:45 a.m., and the group spent time drinking and socializing.
By about 3:55 a.m., Sprunk was visibly drunk. The woman and others helped him to a lower-level bedroom so he could sleep it off. When the woman got Sprunk into the bedroom, he closed the door while she was still inside.
A Wright County Sheriff's Office detective interviewed Sprunk around 10:50 a.m. that morning. Sprunk said he was heavily intoxicated and couldn’t remember any details from the night other than going out drinking at a bar in Albertville and being in a room with the woman. When the detective explained what the woman had reported, Sprunk became upset and denied that anything happened between them, despite having just said he couldn’t remember the events.
Wright County jail records show bail was set at $50,000 with conditions or $150,000 without conditions. Sprunk posted bond on March 4 and was released from custody, with a next court date set for May 1.
Third-degree criminal sexual conduct carries a maximum sentence of fifteen years in prison, a $30,000 fine or both. Fifth-degree criminal sexual conduct carries a maximum of two years in prison, a $10,000 fine or both.
