A 39-year-old man is charged after authorities say he stabbed his brother during a confrontation at a New Brighton home.

The incident happened early Tuesday, Feb. 10, at a residence in the 100 block of 30th Avenue Northwest.

Matthew John Keck, of Minneapolis, is charged with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and felony domestic assault. Prosecutors allege Keck stabbed his brother during an argument after arriving at their mother’s house in the early morning hours.

According to the criminal complaint, police were contacted around 4:05 a.m. after a stabbing victim arrived at a hospital. The victim told officers Keck knocked on the door around 3 a.m. after being missing for three days. The victim said he was concerned about Keck’s well-being and allowed him inside the home even though Keck was not allowed to stay there.

Investigators say Keck immediately began acting aggressively and questioned a vehicle parked in the driveway. The victim told Keck to wait in the garage. The victim reported he and Keck bumped chests as Keck walked past him. During that moment, the victim said he felt a scraping sensation and noticed his shirt had been cut open and he was bleeding heavily from his stomach.

Authorities located Keck on foot in New Brighton around 11:02 p.m. that night. Investigators say Keck attempted to flee and ran toward a Cub Foods grocery store before officers deployed a Taser device and took him into custody. During the arrest, Keck allegedly fought with officers and displayed erratic behavior. Paramedics chemically sedated Keck due to his hostile behavior and transported him to a hospital for treatment.

Court records show Keck has multiple prior domestic violence-related convictions within the past decade, including a fourth-degree assault conviction in 2024 and a threats of violence conviction in 2022. Records also list prior domestic assault convictions in 2015 and 2025.

Second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison and a $14,000 fine. Felony domestic assault carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
