At least one person died in a crash Tuesday afternoon on Highway 15 in Brown County, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Troopers responded at 1:47 p.m. to the southbound lanes of Highway 15 near 170th Street in Cottonwood Township. A 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan, driven by 75-year-old Ladonna Mae Mikkelson and occupied by 83-year-old Charles Keith Mikkelson, both from Madelia, had stopped for roadwork when it was hit from behind by a 2021 Nissan Altima.

The Altima was driven by an 18-year-old woman from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Two 10-year-old passengers were also in the vehicle. Their identities have not yet been released.

The State Patrol says both Mikkelsons died in the crash. Further updates on the conditions of the Altima’s occupants were expected late Wednesday.

The report indicates airbags deployed in both vehicles. Emergency responders from multiple jurisdictions assisted at the scene, including the Brown County Sheriff’s Office, New Ulm Fire, Allina EMS, Madelia EMS, Mayo 1 Air Ambulance and the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

The crash remains under investigation.
