A woman is charged after prosecutors say a confrontation inside a Minneapolis apartment building escalated into a stabbing.
The attack left another woman with an eye injury that medical staff say will likely result in vision loss.
The incident happened Feb. 20 at an apartment complex in Minneapolis, where police were called on reports of a stabbing inside the building. Sharon Anne Venable, 60, of Minneapolis, is charged with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon after investigators say she stabbed a woman in the eye during an argument.
According to the criminal complaint, officers arrived and located Venable inside the building holding a knife in her right hand with what appeared to be blood on her hands. Officers took her into custody without further incident. Police also located the victim, who was bleeding from her left eye and suffering from a laceration to the lower eyelid that had swollen shut.
Court records show the confrontation began in the building lobby during an argument involving a friend of the victim. Investigators say the victim attempted to intervene, telling those involved to leave and urging Venable to stop. During the exchange, Venable allegedly directed a racial slur at the victim and became aggressive. When the victim told her to get out of her face, prosecutors say Venable pulled a knife from her back pocket and stabbed the victim in the face.
The victim was transported to a hospital with injuries described as not life-threatening, but medical staff told her she is likely to lose vision in the affected eye.
Venable was booked into the Hennepin County Jail and remains in custody. She is expected to make an initial court appearance Tuesday. Bail was set at $50,000 with conditions including no contact with the victim, no possession of weapons, remaining law-abiding and making all required court appearances.
If convicted, Venable faces a maximum sentence of seven years in prison.
