A man was shot and killed by Coon Rapids police Wednesday after allegedly refusing repeated commands to drop his knife.
Officers arrived and tried to make contact with the suspect, 65-year-old Robert Edward Davis, from outside the house. Police heard a woman screaming before both the woman and the second man exited the home. The woman was taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment, and later released. The other man was not injured.
Davis remained inside and continued to hold a knife, refusing commands from officers to disarm and exit the home. One officer fired rubber bullets at the suspect, after which the man moved deeper into the home. Officers followed him inside to arrest him. According to the department, Davis continued to wield the knife, and a second less-lethal round was fired.
When Davis reportedly moved toward the officers, a third officer, Timothy Morin, a seven-year veteran, fired his handgun, striking the man. As he tried to get up, a fourth officer used a taser. Officers rendered aid and the man was taken to Mercy Hospital by paramedics, where he later died.
Police say Davis and the female victim were in a long term relationship and were living together at the time of the incident.
BCA crime scene personnel recovered a folding utility knife at the scene.
Authorities say body-worn cameras were active during the incident and captured the encounter. All involved officers have been placed on standard administrative leave.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is now handling the investigation.
