A man was shot during a fight inside the Maplewood Mall Sunday afternoon, leaving one person injured.

The shooting was reported around 2:02 p.m. Feb. 22 at the shopping center along White Bear Avenue, where Maplewood police and fire crews arrived and found an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound.

Authorities said the victim had been shot in the hip and was transported to Regions Hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Investigators determined the gunfire erupted after a group began physically fighting in the mall’s concourse near door No. 5, located on the lower level between the JCPenney and the Pan Asian Center anchor stores. During the disturbance, shots were fired, striking the victim before the suspect fled. Mall officials closed the shopping center for the remainder of the day Sunday following the shooting, but it is expected to reopen under normal hours Monday.

Police arrested two juveniles at the scene, but investigators say neither fired the gun. The two were later booked into the Ramsey County Jail on suspicion of third-degree riot charges related to the fight.

The person believed responsible for the shooting remains at large. Police describe the suspect as a small-build Asian male wearing a black stocking hat, black jacket, white shirt and black pants.

Multiple agencies assisted Maplewood police during the response, including the North Saint Paul Police Department, Roseville Police Department, White Bear Lake Police Department, and the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office. Officers cleared the mall and secured the area while the investigation continued.

Anyone with information or video related to the shooting is asked to contact Lt. Michael Hoemke at 651-249-2605. Authorities say the investigation remains active as detectives work to identify and locate the shooter.

UPDATE | 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24

Maplewood and Saint Paul police arrested two juvenile males connected to the incident on Tuesday morning, with investigators saying video footage helped identify additional suspects.

According to authorities, one of the boys is accused of carrying out the shooting and was booked on charges of first-degree assault, second-degree riot, and possession of a firearm by an ineligible person. The second juvenile was booked on a charge of second-degree riot.

Because all of the suspects are juveniles, their identities are not being released.
