A two-vehicle crash in Cass County left one person dead at a rural intersection Tuesday night, authorities say.

It happened just before 9 p.m. on Feb. 17, at Highway 210 and West Sylvan Drive Southwest in Sylvan Township, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Investigators say the driver of a 2014 Ford Expedition was eastbound on Highway 210 and attempting to turn left onto West Sylvan Drive Southwest when he collided with a westbound 2017 Kia Forte in the intersection. Road conditions were reported as wet at the time of the crash.

The driver of the Ford Expedition, Travis Leigh Grossman, 40, of Pillager, and his two juvenile passengers were not injured. All three were wearing seat belts and alcohol was not suspected to be a factor for the driver.

The driver of the westbound Kia Forte, 21-year-old Jonah Daniel Oleary, from Browerville, Minn., suffered non-life-threatening injuries. 19-year-old Taylor Rae Wahnschaffle, from Richmond, was riding as a passenger in the Kia at the time of the crash and suffered fatal injuries. Authorities say Wahnschaffle was not wearing a seatbelt. Airbags deployed in both vehicles, the incident report says, and the crash remains under investigation.

Pillager Fire, North Ambulance and the Cass County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
