A man is dead and another critically hurt after a shooting inside a South St. Paul home early Friday morning, according to police.
Officers were called just before 3:45 a.m. to the 300 block of Second Avenue South on a report of a medical incident and found two men with gunshot wounds.
One died at the scene and the other was rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
As officers investigated, they determined a suspect had fled from the home. A shelter-in-place order was issued for the surrounding neighborhood while at least eight assisting agencies joined the search. Just after 5:45 a.m., officers located a suspect in the 500 block of First Avenue South, less than half a mile away, and arrested that person without incident.
The shelter-in-place order was lifted shortly after the arrest. Police said in a Facebook update that they “believe there to be no ongoing threat to public safety” though investigators remain in the area canvassing for evidence. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting South St. Paul police in processing the scene.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner identified the victim as 20-year-old Matthew Robert Lee, of South St. Paul. He died from multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide. Police are asking anyone with information to call 651-413-8300 or email tips@sspmn.org.
