Man Found Fatally Shot in Saint Paul Alley

A man was shot and killed early Saturday, found dead in an alley off the 600 block of Arlington Ave. E., Saint Paul police have confirmed.

Officers responded just after midnight to the area of Payne Ave. & Arlington Ave. E. for multiple 911 callers hearing gunfire near the intersection. Officers searched the area and found evidence of the gunfire, including shell casings and blood in an alley. They then found the gunshot victim, an adult male, who was unresponsive.

The victim died at the scene.

A short time later, another 911 caller on the 2100 block of Waukon Ave. reported their “son” was involved in the shooting. According to initial police radio dispatches and not yet officially confirmed: the suspect said that he had driven to the area of Payne & Wheelock Pkwy. to drop off his girlfriend. At some point, the male victim flashed a gun at the suspect, who then shot the victim.

Police responded to the address on the 2100 block of Waukon Ave. and took a possible suspect into custody without incident. That male is cooperating with investigators, SPPD said, and has not yet been identified.

The shooting is the 15th homicide in Saint Paul so far in 2023.

UPDATE: The Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the deceased as Antuan D. Jones, 41, of Saint Paul. Police say a man involved in the incident reported his role to investigators, gave a statement and turned over the gun he used. “In consultation with the Ramsey County Attorney’s office, this male was released pending further investigation,” SPPD said. A 2nd gun was located at the crime scene, and further details on the shooting have not yet been released.

Police say that when the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office for a review of possible charges.
