A 21-year-old man died early Saturday after being found unresponsive in the water at Lake Belle Taine near Nevis.
While emergency crews were responding, dispatchers were told that bystanders were performing CPR.
When deputies arrived, they found people attempting life-saving measures on Aiden Thompson, of Nevis. Deputies and medical personnel assisted until North Ambulance arrived, but Thompson was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to investigators, Thompson had been swimming with a group of people during the early morning hours. As others in the group got out of the water, one person jumped off the dock and discovered Thompson floating face-down nearby.
An autopsy later determined that Thompson died from a cervical spine fracture, the Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.
The incident remains under investigation and authorities have not released additional details about how the injury may have occurred.
