A Northfield man was arrested Thursday evening after an hours-long standoff.
It began when officers tried to serve a warrant in a criminal sexual conduct and child pornography investigation.
Around 2:45 p.m., Northfield police investigators and officers arrived at an apartment in the 1300 block of Heritage Drive to execute the warrant. During initial contact, the suspect reportedly displayed a weapon, threatening himself and placing officers in immediate danger. Officers withdrew from the unit, secured the area and began negotiations in an effort to de-escalate the situation.
The South Metro SWAT Team, which includes members from the Northfield Police Department, was activated due to the heightened risk. A perimeter was established as neighboring residents were evacuated from nearby apartments for safety.
After several hours of tactical efforts and negotiations, the suspect was taken into custody around 7 p.m. No injuries were reported. The scene was later declared safe, and residents were allowed to return to their homes.
Authorities said the incident remains under active investigation, with formal charges expected to be filed by the Rice County Attorney’s Office. The suspect’s name has not yet been released.
