Arrest Made After Man Fatally Shot Near Eagan Gas Station

Sakaria Osman Ahmed, 31,

A Burnsville man has been arrested and is being held on probable cause 2nd-degree assault with a dangerous weapon after another man was shot in the head early Saturday evening in Eagan.

Police were dispatched to the Marathon station at 1969 Silver Bell Rd. just before 7 p.m. There, they found a male victim with a gunshot wound. Initial radio dispatches said the victim was shot in the head, struck near the ear and was initially unconscious, but still breathing.

Police say the suspect, later identified as Sakaria Osman Ahmed, 31, fled the initial shooting scene in a vehicle, crashed nearby and then ran southwest. Police were able to search the area and found Ahmed—who was reportedly armed with a handgun—and took him into custody near a store in the Twin Cities Premium Outlets mall, just southwest of the Marathon station.

The victim was transported to the hospital by EMS and police said Sunday that he later died of his injuries.

Multiple agencies assisted Eagan police with a perimeter and suspect search in the bustling commercial district Saturday night just east of the intersection of Highway 77 and Highway 13.

“Eagan detectives and crime scene personnel are actively processing the crime scene and interviewing witnesses. This is an active open investigation. At this time, we do not believe there is a threat to the public,” police said in a media release.

Ahmed has a first court appearance set for Tuesday, Dec. 21 in Hastings. He has prior convictions for 5th-degree, misdemeanor assault in Scott County from 2013.

More information on what preceded the shooting or a possible motive has not yet been released. Formal charges are expected in the coming days.

UPDATE: Police have confirmed the man who was shot, 33-year-old Faisal A. Abukar, of Eagan, was pronounced dead sometime Sunday.

UPDATE: Ahmed was charged Tuesday, Dec. 21 with intentional 2nd-degree murder in this case.

UPDATE: Ahmed was found guilty by a jury on Wednesday, May 18, 2023
