A driver was seriously injured in a crash with a school bus carrying nearly two dozen students Friday afternoon in New Brighton.

Just after 4 p.m. on Friday, emergency crews responded to the intersection of County Road 88 and County Road D in the city of New Brighton for a report of a head-on crash involving a school bus.

Crews arrived and reported that a vehicle had struck the bus head-on and that the driver was injured and trapped. Firefighters worked to extricate the victim from the vehicle before he was brought to Regions Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

According to scanner audio, the driver suffered a possible broken leg and head injury, but was awake for paramedics.

Officials said there were 21 students on the bus, all from Mounds View High School. One student was transported to the hospital for minor injuries. The remaining students were picked up by another bus or were picked up by parents at the scene.

The Minnesota State Patrol was called to conduct a crash reconstruction in an effort to determine what led up to it. Roads were blocked in the area as crews finished the investigation and towed vehicles from the scene.

New Brighton emergency crews were assisted by many other agencies including Allina EMS, North Memorial EMS, the Minnesota State Patrol, Roseville Fire and Police, and the Saint Anthony Police Department.
