Driver Found Dead After Crash into Mississippi River in Minneapolis

Investigation is underway after a driver was found dead in a partially submerged vehicle in the Mississippi River Sunday morning.

Minneapolis Park Police and the Minneapolis Fire Department responded to the scene near 33rd Street and West River Parkway in Minneapolis around 7:50 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 5.

There they discovered the vehicle at the bottom of a steep embankment and a deceased male occupant was located inside, authorities have confirmed to MN CRIME.

Minneapolis Fire personnel retrieved the body from the river, with the Minneapolis Police Department’s Traffic Unit and the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office were called to investigate the crash. The medical examiner will confirm the man’s identity and determine the cause of death.

Efforts are underway by Minneapolis Fire to recover the vehicle and as of 11:15 a.m., the parkway remains closed between 31st and 35th Streets for responders continue their work.
