Police are investigating Saint Paul’s 29th homicide of 2024 after a man was found fatally shot in a vehicle Friday afternoon.

Officers responded to the 600 block of Aurora Avenue just before 1:40 p.m. after several 911 callers reported hearing gunfire, with some estimating as many as 20 shots.

When officers arrived, they found an adult male sitting inside a parked vehicle, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body.

Emergency responders, including Saint Paul Fire medics, treated the victim at the scene and brought him into an ambulance. Despite efforts to save his life, the man died from his injuries. His body was later transported to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office, where an autopsy will confirm his identity and official cause of death.

According to preliminary details, the man was sitting in the parked vehicle with another man and two small children when a dark vehicle—possibly a smaller SUV—drove past. Occupants of the vehicle opened fire, striking the victim multiple times. Witnesses reported seeing at least two people shooting from inside the suspect vehicle, which was last seen southbound on Dale Street after the shooting.

The other man and the two children in the victim’s vehicle were not physically harmed, but police noted that two bullet holes were found in a car seat in the back of the vehicle.

Officers secured the scene and began canvassing for witnesses and surveillance footage in the area. Numerous evidence markers were placed on the ground as investigators documented shell casings and other evidence.

Police are continuing to investigate what led to the shooting and working to identify the suspects involved. No arrests have been made as of publication.

It’s the 29th homicide in Saint Paul so far this year. By the end of 2023, there were a total of 34 homicides in the city, according to a Pioneer Press tally. Anyone with info on the Friday homicide should call Saint Paul police at 651-266-5650.
