Man Charged in Fatal Woodbury Overdose

A Minneapolis man is charged with causing the death of a 22-year-old Woodbury man after allegedly selling the man counterfeit pills containing fentanyl.

Woodbury police were called to a residence on Sunbury Alcove on March 27 around noon for a report of a man found not breathing. Officers arrived and found the 22-year-old deceased in the basement bedroom. According to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner, the man’s cause of death was said to be fentanyl toxicity.

Officers located a cut straw used to ingest drugs and a folded $20 bill that contained five blue pills in the victim’s wallet.

Woodbury police officers forensically examined the man’s cell phone and found multiple text messages with a contact named “Pollo” from March 26. In the text messages, the victim messaged Pollo to buy pills and arranged to meet at an address in Brooklyn Park. Text messages reveal that the victim pulled up to the address around 8:30 p.m., and at 11:32 p.m., Pollo asked the victim, “You good my boy?” to which the victim replied, “only did like half of one.”

Police officers determined the phone number associated Pollo belonged to Burton M S G Kegan Jr, 21, of Minneapolis. Call records show the victim and Kegan to be in the same immediate vicinity in Brooklyn Park around 8:30 p.m. on March 26.

Officers arrested Kegan at his workplace on May 4. While being searched, officers located several pills in his pocket that matched those found in the victim’s wallet.

In a statement to law enforcement, Kegan denied selling the victim the pills, but admitted that he left pills on the center console of the victim’s car.

If convicted, Kegan faces up to 25 years in prison. He remains jailed on $100,000 bond with conditions. Minnesota court records show Kegan has no criminal history in the state.
