A 911 caller reported around 3:10 a.m. that a person was lying on the sidewalk in front of a building on the 600 block of Dale St. N.
According to initial law enforcement dispatch audio, the 911 caller said the man was found lying on the sidewalk and was unresponsive with blood near his face. Police said that a report of possible gunfire heard in the area about 30 minutes before may have been related.
When Saint Paul Fire medics arrived, they found a man believed to be in his 50s who was deceased.
Because it wasn’t immediately clear what caused the man’s death, medics called for police officers, who responded, secured the scene and began looking for possible evidence.
The Ramsey County medical examiner conducted an autopsy to determine a cause of death—and it was discovered that the victim had been shot. Police said "at least one bullet hole" was found in the man’s body and he had trauma to his body and face.
Members of the SPPD video management unit are looking for any surveillance video and the forensics services unit is processing the scene. Investigators ask anyone with information to call 651-266-5650.
Investigators said the shooting does not appear to have been random, but no arrests have yet been announced. There was no suspect information released.
The victim shot has not yet been named as of Friday afternoon. His killing is the 21st homicide in Saint Paul so far this year.
