A Robbinsdale man has been sentenced to 13.75 years in prison for causing a high-speed crash that killed one person and seriously injured another while fleeing police.

As part of a plea agreement, charges of criminal vehicular homicide and criminal vehicular operation were dismissed.

The incident occurred on July 8, 2023, when a Robbinsdale police officer observed Hudson driving a Tesla at 55 mph in a 30 mph zone on 42nd Avenue North. When the officer attempted to pull him over, Hudson sped away, turning onto Orchard Avenue and reaching speeds between 70 and 90 mph. Due to the dangerous conditions, the officer discontinued the pursuit for public safety reasons. Moments later, Hudson ignored a stop sign at the intersection of Orchard Avenue and 36th Avenue, crashing into a minivan driven by Emily Gerding, who had the right of way.
The collision caused catastrophic injuries. Emily, a mother of two and special education teacher, was rushed to the hospital but did not survive. Her husband, John Gerding, who was also in the minivan, suffered a traumatic brain injury, brain bleeding, and required intubation after being placed in a coma. The Gerdings had to be extricated from their vehicle by emergency responders before being transported to the hospital.
Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty expressed her condolences to the Gerding family and highlighted the impact of the tragedy on the broader community. “Emily’s death and John’s injuries are devastating losses,” Moriarty said. “The reckless actions of Mr. Hudson took a life and altered many others, including those of Emily’s children. This sentence holds him accountable and reinforces the importance of public safety.”
