Saint Paul police say a man was shot and killed just after noon Tuesday in a busy area on the city’s east side.

Officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire at a business in the 1300 block of Maryland Avenue East around 12:30 p.m.

When they arrived, they found a man lying in front of a business with a gunshot wound to his torso. Officers immediately began providing first aid and requested medics from Saint Paul Fire Department.

Medics arrived and began efforts to transport the victim to Regions Hospital, but he was pronounced dead inside the ambulance. His body was then transported to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Authorities from the Saint Paul Police Department, with support from Maplewood Police and Ramsey County deputies, secured the area and began a search for the suspect, who had fled the scene on foot. A possible suspect was located shortly after on the 1500 block of Clear Avenue East. Officers engaged in a brief foot chase before apprehending the man. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

Homicide investigators are working to determine what led to the shooting. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to officially identify the victim and establish the cause of death.

This shooting marks the 17th homicide in Saint Paul in 2024.
