Suspects in Custody After Shots Fired at Golden Valley Officer During Pursuit

Two suspects are in custody and awaiting charges after a pursuit and shots being fired at a Golden Valley police officer Wednesday night.

Golden Valley officers were called to the area near 34th Avenue North & Major Avenue North after a citizen reported a suspicious vehicle.

When officers located the suspicious vehicle, one suspect fled on foot while firing gunshots toward an officer. The officer’s squad car was struck by gunfire, but the officer was uninjured, police said. The officer did not return gunfire.

The driver of the vehicle fled a short distance before crashing and getting stuck in a snowbank.

The driver was taken into custody at the car, while the shooter was taken into custody after being located by the State Patrol helicopter and a canine in the backyard of a nearby residence, according to initial law enforcement dispatch audio.

Charges are pending against both suspects.

“I’m proud of the actions of the Golden Valley Police Department and assisting agencies, including the Crystal, Robbinsdale, St. Louis Park Police Departments, Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, and the MN State Patrol, for their work to bring this dangerous situation to a safe conclusion with no serious injuries,” interim Golden Valley Police Chief Scott Nadeau said in a media release.

“I am concerned that someone with such an extensive criminal history that includes burglary, robbery, and deadly weapons continues to be able to victimize our communities and put our citizens and police officers in harm’s way,” Nadeau said. “We appreciate the citizen who contacted us last night to report a suspicious vehicle. While this event is unusual in our community, we encourage our resident’s to be vigilant and call when they see suspicious activity.”
